I think it's important to mention that even with walking, good shoes are important. Depending on the amount of excercise you've been getting and the amount of weight your carrying you risk hurting yourself even with walking. Make sure there is plenty of cushioning to reduce joint impact. There is nothing like aching heels or shin splints to put a stop to your program.

Also, don't forget the pedometer so you can keep track of how far you've gone. It is an excellent motivation.

Jodi,
Thanks for adding that information on walking shoes.

I also agree that a pedometer can be a great motivational tool. A beginner can start by tracking how much they walk in a normal day and work from there to build up to the suggested 10,000 setps a day. Once you reach that point you can challenge yourself to take it to the next level.
