According to a recent Penn Sate study, people lost more weight usingthe Volumetrics diet. The study proved that eating a cup of soup or a big salad before a meal works to fill you up so you will consume fewer total calories with your meal.
Eating something low in calories (with a high water content) before eating a meal can curb your hunger. You can get the same effect by drinking water or snacking on a handful of almonds before a meal. The idea is to fill up on light choices to fool your stomach into being satisfied.
The problem with this type of diet, and I have made many attempts at it over the years, is that foods with high water content give you a false sense of fullness. To me it feels more like bloating. I feel uncomfortable because of the bloating and the full stomach, while still craving the foods I used to eat. In addition, drinking a lot of water and eating a lot of low calorie, high water foods will keep you running to the bathroom all day.
Though the volumetrics diet may prove to be a healthy weight loss plan, it has a negative effect on my weight loss because as soon as I feel deprived, I want to make up for it with a lot of the foods I love. Typically, this leads me off track and causes me to gain weight. After many attempts at the volumetrics diet, I have learned the hard way that it is simply not for me.
