As someone who has been overweight since childhood, I have always considered my extra baggage as a cosmetic issue. I have always wanted to lose weight so I could look better. I was tired of shopping in the tiny plus size sections in department stores or in overpriced specialty stores for clothes that fit but never flattered.
Recently I had a health scare, however, that made me realize my excess weight is a health issue. I experienced severe chest pain twice in one day. Of course, heart attack was a possibility that did cross my mind because I am at risk with high cholesterol. I had an EKG, which looked fine. My doctor prescribed an antacid and he scheduled me for a cardiac stress test. The idea of heart trouble at my age due to poor eating habits and lack of exercise is a scary thought. Scary enough to make me take losing weight more seriously and to take the focus off of the way I look and focus on my overall health and how I feel.
Reading and reviewing fad diets makes dieting more confusing. Everything seems like it would work to help me lose weight, but I know in my heart that the only way to lose weight and become a healthier person is to eat natural foods, increase my fruits and veggies, cut back on the sweets I eat and commit to daily exercise. I have actually done this in the past and was able to lose 45 pounds. For some reason I got off track after eight months of doing well and was not able to get back on track for a length of time. Now it is time to eat for heart health.
