Spice up your walking routine by joining your local Volkswalking Club. Travel your way to fitness with walks that allow family fun, sightseeing and exercise.

Walking is the most common and preferred exercise for people losing weight. But chances are once you have been at it a while, walking the same route gets tiresome.

Time to mix up your routine? Looking for a slightly more challenging walk? Want to walk in unique locales? Look no further.

A club for traveling walkers, Volkswalkers (or Volksmarchers) is available for walkers of all ages. Volkswalking is the most popular Volkssport in America with more than 350 clubs across the states.

What is Volkswalking?

Volkswalking is a Volkssport (or "people's sport") that develops weekend or year round preplanned events with a starting point, a finish line and either markings or guides along the way. Each event is a 10 K (6.2 mile) walk. It is completely noncompetitive. Everyone who finishes the walk is a winner! Better yet: there are no pledge forms to fuss over, no dues to collect and no racing. Volkssports are strictly for fun and fitness.

Some of the destinations are unique and are perfect for planning weekend trips around. One of the upcoming events in 2007 includes a walk over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Who Can Be a Volkswalker?

Anyone! The clubs are open to all ages, including families and their four-legged companions. Signing up is as easy as finding a club or walk in your area to get started.

How Difficult Are the Routes?

All routes are rated on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 is for the easier routes without hills that are good for strollers and people of any activity level. The walks gradually get harder and those ranked a 5 usually have hilly or uneven portions on the walk. Start off slow and walk at your own pace.

What Does It Cost?

In many cases the walks are free, although some Volkswalking clubs charge a few dollars for the medals. You can also purchase a $5 logbook to track your progress and where you've been.

What Have You Got To Lose?

Volkswalking is a great way to incorporate travel, fitness and socializing. This sport has something to offer everyone with little to no investment. So strap on your waling shoes and plan your first 10K walk.
