When speaking with a physician about starting a weight loss program, patients should have an understanding of current medical conditions, including medications.

Patients interested in weight management can find support from physicians. Talking to a physician about weight loss is the first step in establishing an effective weight program. Some patients do not know where to begin when speaking with physicians.

One tip is asking for a medical evaluation. Other tips include keeping an open mind, learning about medical conditions with the effects of medications, and using a list of questions.

Ask for a Medical Evaluation

An evaluation may include medical laboratory work such as a complete blood count (CBC) or a general evaluation, including checking blood pressure. Some medical conditions where weight loss should be carefully monitored include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Lyme disease

Keep an Open Mind and Discuss Health Issues

Some patients avoid discussing health concerns because the physician is too busy or the patient thinks it may take too much time. It is important to keep an open mind about weight loss and take steps to maintain good health. Patients can make a short list of weight loss questions.

Learn about Difficult Medical Conditions and Weight Loss

Some patients may be able to lose weight without difficulty ,while some patients may have medical conditions with aggressive treatments, including medications. This may cause these patients not to lose weight or lose weight slowly. Some challenging medical conditions can include:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Neurological disorders
  • Endocrine disorders

Learn about Medications that May Increase Weight

Patients with chronic health conditions may take medications which interfere with weight loss. Some patients may be able to lower their dosage or switch to another medication without weight gain side effects. Some medications that may increase weight include:

  • Insulin for diabetes
  • Neuroleptics for schizophrenia
  • Lithium for manic-depressive illness

Ask Weight-Loss Questions at Physician Visit

Weight loss patients should be prepared for physician visits. A medical visit may be short ,so it is important to have pre-written questions. A patient should ask questions once a physician is focused on the patient.

Here are some pre-written weight loss questions for patients to ask physicians:

  • Can I benefit from weight loss?
  • Should I partner with a weight loss buddy?
  • What is ideal weight for my age group?
  • Can my current health condition interfere with losing weight?

Patients interested in weight loss can speak with a physician to review current medical history such as diabetes. By learning about medical conditions, weight gain medications and taking a list of questions to a physician's visit, patients can take the first step in weight loss. A physician-monitored weight loss program can help patients loss weight slowly.
