There are certain foods, which are rich in vitamins, cellulose, and other useful substances but have low energy value. These foods can help dieters a lot!

Negative calorie foods are a somehow controversial topic because there are both experts, who admire them and experts, who are very skeptical about their miraculous properties. But it is a fact that negative calorie foods exist and they can help dieters lose weight without starving to death.

What are Negative Calorie Foods?

Negative calorie foods are those foods which require more energy to be processed by the body than they themselves contain. Yes, it sounds too good to be true but there are such foods. And no, negative calorie foods are neither weight loss pills, nor chemical inventions – they are just foods, which can be found in almost any garden or supermarket. It might sound absurd that the more (negative calorie foods) one eats, the slimmer he or she gets but with negative calorie foods this is exactly so.

The critics of negative calorie diet would say that the diet lacks scientific proof and that it can lead to malnutrition but if used wisely – i.e. when a diet does not constitute only or mainly of negative calorie foods, these foods are a great ally in weight loss.

Which Foods are Negative Calorie?

As can be expected, fruits and vegetables top the list of negative calorie foods. As can also be expected, steaks, cakes and chocolates do not make it into this list. But this does not mean that the list of negative calorie foods includes foods which are not delicious. On the contrary, there are many fruits and vegetables, which are delicious and weight loss friendly. And some of them contain a lot of sugar, so there is no reason to complain that life is not sweet. Here are some of the fruits and vegetables, which are considered to be negative calorie foods:

  • Negative calorie vegetables: There are many vegetables which can be listed here and the most common of them are: asparagus, beet, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery (both the root and the chicory), cucumber, garlic, green beans, lettuce, onion, radishes, spinach, turnip, and zucchini.
  • Negative calorie fruits: The list of negative calorie fruits is not as long as the list of negative calorie vegetables but still there are many fruits which require more energy to process than they themselves input. These fruits are: apples, berries, grapefruit, lemon, mango, orange, papaya, pineapple, strawberries, tangerines.

So, when there is such a rich choice of delicious negative calorie fruits and vegetables, dieters can't complain that there is nothing tasty to eat. It just takes some imagination (and culinary skills, of course) to prepare great dishes, which consist of negative calorie foods. Actually, almost 100 foods are categorized as negative calorie, so there is a lot of room for experimentation in the kitchen!
