Tips on how to limit or avoid candy and sweets on Halloween and at parties. Portion control and buying items other than candy to pass out helps save calories.

Halloween is creeping up on us once again. This is the time of year when donuts, cider, graveyard brownies and spider cupcakes appear everywhere from school functions and office parties to virtually any event that takes place in the month of October. And that's not even counting the candy!

When Buying Candy

If you buy candy to pass out to children in your neighborhood for Halloween, here are some tips to make sure it gets in their trick-or-treat bags and not in your mouth:

  • Don't buy until the last minute. Buying candy too early isn't a good idea because it is too tempting to eat it yourself if it is in the house.
  • Buy treats that you don't like. Don't like coconut? Then buy Almonds Joys to pass out and you won't be tempted to eat one.
  • Buy lowfat candy. A piece of licorice isn't going to do you in if you choose to sneak one for yourself.
  • Avoid candy altogether. Pass out a different kind of snack like pretzels or choose a non-food item like stickers, pencils or playdough.

When Attending a Hallowing Party

You can survive a Halloween party without going over your calorie range or blowing your diet. Here are some tips on what to do to avoid overeating at a party:

  • Find a seat away from the snack table.
  • Bring a healthy snack so you have at least one option.
  • Eat before you go so you aren't hungry.
  • Focus on friends and fun rather than food.
  • Choose fresh fruit if available.
  • Take a small portion of your favorite dessert or snack and leave the rest.

Halloween doesn't have to be scary for your diet. Being prepared can make all the difference.

All good ideas - thanks! ...Although I noticed you forgot, "Turn off lights and hide in basement until November 1st."
