New research shows how the effect of adding certain foods to your everyday diet, such as vinegar and curry, can actually reduce your body fat.

There are many everyday foods that researchers believe act as natural fat fighters, actually helping to reduce body fat. Here are the results of some recent studies.

Vinegar

Researchers in Japan are reporting the results of a new 2009 study that shows that ordinary vinegar can help prevent the accumulation of body fat and, therefore, weight gain. It is believed that acetic acid, the main chemical in vinegar, affects the genes, which produce the proteins that help the body break down fats as well as the proteins that burn body fat to create body heat.

The study by the Central Research Institute of the Mizkan Group Corporation in Japan involved feeding laboratory mice a high fat diet supplemented with a specific amount of acetic acid. The results of the study showed that the mice developed significantly less body fat (up to 10 percent less) than the other mice that were not fed the vinegar but ate the same amount of the high fat diet. The results of this study means the researchers will now conduct the same study on humans, to see if it garners the same effect.

Turmeric and Curry

Another 2009 study by Agricultural Research Service (ARS), has determined that a bioactive component called curcumin that is found in the spices turmeric and curry, delays the spread of fat tissue by stopping the growth of new blood vessels, which is necessary to build fat tissue.

In this study, mice were again fed a high fat diet supplemented with curcumin. Researchers found that the mice that received the curcumin did not gain as much weight or body fat as the group who ate the same high fat diet but did not receive the curcumin supplements.

The mice that took the curcumin also had lower levels of blood glucose, triglyceride, fatty acid, cholesterol and liver fat. Like the vinegar study, the researchers will next determine the effectiveness of curcumin in reducing weight gain in humans.

White Tea

Researchers have now shown that an extract in white tea is a highly effective fat fighter. A team of researchers from Beiersdorf AG, Germany, studied the effects on body fact of an extract of white tea in a study released in early 2009. After treating lab-cultured human fat cells with the white tea extract, the researchers found that the extract effectively inhibited the development of new fat cells and stimulated the breakdown of fat in mature fat cells.

White tea is less processed than green and black tea, allowing it to maintain more of its caffeine and antioxidants, both believed to assist in preventing the production of fat cells. This study has also lead researchers to believe that there may be other plant extracts, which may help in fat reduction.

Studies such as these are important to show even small changes in diet can help lower fat levels, as the population continues to struggle with obesity.
