Magazines, books, celebrities and internet promise fast and quick weight loss. However, it is a fact of life that "weight loss" and "quick and easy" do not go together.

People trying to lose weight generally give up in frustration when there is little weight loss on whatever diet they are trying. The promise of easy and fast shedding of kilos is an empty one and frustration replaces determination. Sadly, the result of this generally leads to people turning to comfort food and an increase in weight, not a decrease.

Five Facts Associated With Weight Loss

Following are five facts about weight loss:

  1. Losing weight is not easy.
  2. Losing weight takes time.
  3. Losing weight is hard work.
  4. Losing weight is more difficult than putting it on.
  5. Losing weight requires determination.

People turning to diets that promise fast results will be greatly disappointed. Similarly those that look for diets that promise easy weight loss will experience the same feeling.

At the end of the day, the only way to lose weight is to follow a strict exercise regime and eat less and better, which is hard work.

Five Steps to Follow to Start Losing Weight

You can start losing weight now by taking the following steps:

  • Exercise every day. Often people use the excuse of lack of time or other reasons for not exercising, but if weight loss is a serious goal, one needs to be creative and find ways to fit exercise into the program everyday.
  • Build up slowly but have constant challenges. Just like an elite athlete, any exercise program should have short, medium and long-term goals. A short-term goal may be to start exercising every day for ten minutes in the first week and build it to ten in the second, and so on.
  • Eat Less. Most people not only eat too much fat and sugar but also just eat too much. Cutting down on the meal size is a simple start to any weight loss program. Instead of turning to a chocolate or piece of cake after a meal, have a carrot instead.
  • Eat healthier food. Writing down for a week exactly what is eaten helps identify where eating habits need to be improved. If fatty foods appear too often on the list a conscious effort needs to be made to replace those with fruit and vegetable.
  • Reward. Working toward goals and achieving them should be rewarded. Perhaps there is a new outfit at the end of the hard work or a nice dinner at a restaurant.

Like most worthwhile things in life, weight loss requires hard work and determination. The benefits of feeling better, having more energy and looking good will ultimately make the effort more than worthwhile. Start exercising now and developing better eating habits to reap the ultimate reward of losing weight!
